How Your Support Creates Impact

Strengthened cultural identity and pride

Kanatahkwèn:ke exists to reaffirm the value of Kanien’kehá:ka identity, language, and culture after generations of Indigenous identity being undermined. By reconnecting people with Onkwehón:we teachings, cultural practices, and ancestral wisdom, the centre supports the preservation and continued strength of Kanien’kehá:ka traditions for future generations.

Improved emotional wellbeing (confidence, resilience, and overall happiness)

Kanatahkwèn:ke provides a welcoming environment for individuals to nurture their sense of belonging and deepen their connection to who they are as Kanien’kehá:ka people. The restoration of cultural ties and a sense of community are closely associated with wellbeing, resilience, and the enduring vitality of Indigenous nations.

Increased intergenerational transmission of knowledge and traditions

Oral tradition is a foundational method of knowledge transmission within Indigenous communities. Elders, as keepers of ancestral wisdom, hold a respected and central role in this system of learning. At Kanatahkwèn:ke, community members, especially youth, will be encouraged to engage with Elders, helping to ensure the continued vitality of the Kanien’kehá:ka language and ways of life for generations to come.

Enhanced engagement and knowledge-sharing with non-Indigenous communities

As part of reconciliation efforts and in alignment with the spirit of the Two Row Wampum, symbolizing respectful coexistence between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples, Kanatahkwèn:ke will function as a hub for knowledge sharing. Its reach will extend beyond the community, offering opportunities for visitors to learn about Kanien’kehá:ka history, culture, and heritage.
