Kahnawà:ke, 29 Seskehkó:wa/September 2025

This milestone marks a decade of collaboration between the Kanien’kehá:ka Onkwawén:na Raotitióhkwa Language and Cultural Center (KORLCC), Turtle Island Theatre, Kahnawà:ke Tourism and the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke. Kanatahkwèn:ke reflects the rich culture, resilience, and creativity of the Kanien’kehá:ka people, while providing a
unified vision for cultural preservation and artistic expression.

“This name honors our past, embraces our present, and sets a powerful foundation for future generations, ” said Kawennanóron Lisa Phillips, Executive Director, KORLCC.“It’s more than a just a new building—this is a living space for storytelling, learning, and celebrating who we are.”

The logo was developed in partnership between the Building Committee, community members, and designed by local artist Teiowí:sonte Tommy Deer. Each element of the design was carefully chosen to represent the values and spirit of the community. Depicted by three antiquated longhouses in a circle bound by Teiohá:te (the Two Row Wampum), the logo commemorates our previous village, Kanatahkwèn:ke (where the village is picked up) that was situated in that region from 1696-1716. The river motif below the text is a reminder of our age-old connection to the river, as Kahnawa’kehó:non.

Kanatahkwèn:ke will host the new state of the art Kahnawà:ke Museum, continue to offer exhibitions, language revitalization programs, cultural workshops, youth arts initiatives, and live performances at our new modern Theatre —all under one roof and one mission: to strengthen and share Kanien’kehá:ka identity.

“I am proud of the name and logo of our beautiful project that has taken a decade to build, and decades before to dream and hope for. To me, it represents community, the people and protecting our language, culture and identity.”
